(English) Still in Love with Synths! The First Meetup of 2026 Features a Special Focus on Synthesizers, with Guests Including HATAKEN and Momose Yasunaga Synthesizers have become an essential part of modern music production, yet many producers may feel that sound design is not their strong suit—perhaps relying mainly on presets with only minor tweaks. For this Ableton Meetup Tokyo, we are returning to our Friday evening schedule and showcasing practical approaches to using synthesizers creatively in music production. HATAKEN, founder of the Tokyo Festival of Modular and a renowned modular synthesizer performer, will present “Approaching Software Synths with a Modular Mindset.” In this presentation, he explores how the distinctive mindset of modular synthesis can be applied to common software synthesizers and plug-ins. By focusing on macro controls and modulation, he demonstrates how to design systems in which sounds continuously evolve—insights that will be valuable even for those who are not modular users. Modular synthesist and singer Momose Yasunaga will appear alongside SUIGADOU, a playwright and stage sound designer known for his advanced use of Max/MSP. Together, they will introduce a novel performance approach that combines improvised melodies with chord progressions generated in Max for Live, driving modular synthesizers in real time. Ableton Meetup Tokyo organizer and Ableton Certified Trainer KOYAS will present “Getting Started with Synth Sound Design Using Drift.” Aimed at beginners, this session demonstrates how to build an entire track using only Drift, the synthesizer included in all editions of Live, making it an accessible introduction to synth sound design. At the always-popular Touch & Try session, we will feature the newly announced DJ-oriented effects unit, AlphaTheta RMX-IGNITE. Attendees can experience hands-on how this all-in-one unit—combining a sampler with a wide range of effects—can be used in live performance settings. Ableton Meetup Tokyo offers discounted admission not only for students, but also for attendees aged 28 and under. Students can receive the discount by presenting a valid student ID at the entrance, while those aged 25 and under can do so by showing an ID that confirms their age. We look forward to welcoming everyone with an interest in synthesizers and modular systems.
