San Francisco Nightlife Guide: The Mission, SoMa & the Bay Area's Best Bars

San Francisco closes at 2am and the fog arrives at 10pm, but the city has produced more culturally significant nightlife than almost anywhere else. From the Mission's essential bar scene to SoMa's dance clubs, Castro's queer institutions, and North Beach's literary dive bars — this is the complete guide to going out in San Francisco.

SF Nightlife for First-Timers: What Nobody Warns You About

SF nightlife doesn't follow the rules of any other city — and if you walk in with NYC or Miami expectations, you'll spend your first night confused and overcharged near Union Square. Here's what eight years of going out in this city actually taught me.

San Francisco Nightlife Guide

San Francisco has a legendary underground nightlife culture built on decades of rave history, LGBTQ+ activism, and avant-garde music. The scene is smaller and more intimate than LA or Miami, but the quality of bookings — particularly for techno, house, and experimental music — punches well above its size. Nightlife Today tracks the full SF scene so you don't miss the hidden gems.

SoMa (South of Market) is the nightclub hub. 1015 Folsom is SF's legendary warehouse club — one of the oldest continuous rave venues in the US. Public Works hosts live music and DJ events across two rooms. Audio brings heavy techno and house bookings. The Castro is the historic LGBTQ+ heart of the city, with bars and clubs that have defined SF's queer nightlife for decades. The Mission has a Latin and DIY underground scene, and Tenderloin hides dive bars and unexpected late-night spots.

SF's bar close is 2 AM like all of California, but The Endup is famous for its Sunday morning sessions that legally start at 6 AM and run all day. BART (the subway) closes at midnight on weekdays and ~1 AM on weekends — plan accordingly, as rideshare surges after last call can be brutal. SF weather is unpredictable; always bring a layer even in summer. The rave/underground scene is strong here — check community forums and Resident Advisor for events not listed publicly.

Friday and Saturday are standard peak nights. Sundays are unique to SF — The Endup's infamous Sunday sessions attract a dedicated local crowd for all-day dancing. Thursday nights at Public Works and smaller SoMa venues draw the local regulars. Winter and spring see strong club bookings; summer is festival season with Portola, SF Symphony, and Golden Gate Park events drawing major artists.
