Ableton Meetup Tokyo Vol.66 How Do You Make Melodies

Melody is one of the essential elements of music, yet some genres work perfectly well without it. Still, for track makers who mainly build loops and beats, writing songs with melodies — such as vocal tracks — can be a real challenge, and perhaps even feel a little awkward. At this meetup, three presenters will share their approaches to creating melodies. Making his first appearance at Ableton Meetup Tokyo, phritz, a member of the J-pop project PAS TASTA, will give a presentation titled “Making Full Use of Reference Tracks.” He will show how setting a reference track can help keep your music focused when writing melodies — and how even borrowing a chord progression can be a valid starting point. Ableton Certified Trainer Satoshi Moriya will present “Melody Changes Depending on Where You Place It,” based on lessons he teaches at a music college. He will introduce ways to intentionally build melodies by organizing the roles and placement of sounds. Also making her AMT debut, composer and sound artist Megumu Hayakawa will present “Hatching the Egg of Melody into a Finished Track.” She will show her production process, treating a rough sketch of melody and chords as an egg, and developing that small idea into a complete track. Our regular Touch & Try section will feature Ableton products. Push 3 and Move will be on display, giving you the chance to try the hardware hands-on and ask questions.
