SLICK DOWN is back with the first night of our residency at @bossanovacivicclub with a love letter to Club music. We’re incredibly honored to have THE pioneer and architect of Jersey Club, DJ Tameil joining us for this night along with DJ Freedem (bossa debut). DJ Tameil’s work carries a distinct physicality and electricity, and to experience it is to understand the contours of Newark and all the places from which the music springs. It is futurist, transcendentally joyful, and bursting with possibility. DJ Freedem engages with that lineage in their own distinct way, envisioning Club in exhilarating forms. Their process behind the decks is euphoric, relentless, playful, and entrenched in Black and queer underground traditions. How do we honor Club music and all that it’s given us? It’s a question that feels more material the further the sound travels. How do we hold onto its specificity, its roots in our communities, and its histories while it moves across the world? We have always tried to ground ourselves in the expansiveness of Black electronic music, how it travels, how it transforms, how it holds memory while making space for the new in its canon. Club music has always been shaped by those eager to push its bounds and we hope you accept this invitation to dance within that context. We’ll see you on the dancefloor!
