Performance programming for Double Bind curated by Catharine Clark. Wura-Natasha Ogunji will perform and create an artwork on site. Double Bind: Belonging and Its Discontents considers how belonging is constructed, negotiated, withheld, and contested in America.Taking its title from the concept of the “double bind,” the artists’ works contend with the contradictions embedded within systems of visibility, citizenship, identity, memory, and power. Across diverse approaches—sculpture, painting, textile, photography, video, installation, and performance—the artworks elaborate on the unstable conditions under which people are asked to assimilate, perform legibility, or navigate histories shaped by migration, colonialism, displacement, race, labor, and ecological transformation.
