The latest live installment of Crash Course welcomes Roxanne Harris, a Los Angeles-based new media artist-researcher and musician-programmer. Swami first encountered Harris’s practice at the 2024 Dweller Festival opening at MoMA PS1. There, she showcased her mastery of live coding—using Sonic Pi to weave jungle breaks through the atmospheric textures of the Final Fantasy XIII soundtrack. By parameterizing on-the-fly, Harris pushes the boundaries of improvisational dexterity within computational limits. Her work invites the audience into the creative "black box," exploring speculative futures through a lens of extended cognition. Currently pursuing her MFA at UCLA, Harris describes her mission simply: to create new visual and cognitive entry points for the listener to experience the "music behind the process."
