​Bringing writers and musicians into conversation with each other, Echoes explores the natural tether between language and sound, experimenting with repetition as a tool of emphasis and interdependence. ​Join us on April 26 at Conspire for the series premiere, where performers will engage with the question, what will we do with our temporary miracle of not dying?, as posed by Hanif Abdurraqib in his ekphrastic poem “Mahalia Jackson at the Table, 1958”. Invoking the legacy of Jackson and Abdurraqib’s dedication to the boundless potential of love, we hope these inter-genre harmonies will offer an instructive, potent reminder of what we owe each other: our untethered imaginations, revolutionary faith, and rapturous exchange. As we negotiate life under siege, what is required to open our hearts to love and why must we do it? What ordinary acts of care build reciprocity and power? How does the ongoing presence of martyrs transform our reality?
