On this edition of Decomposition, we'll traverse the sounds of the Hip Hop / Rap from ~1989 - ~2003. This music is definitely the bedrock of my musical taste and I want to explore some of the samples and flows of this era. We'll focus on tapes this session, with a special focus on the mixes / compilations that show how we engaged with this music in the car, at the crib or on the dance floor. Decomposition is a mix series dedicated to media that is disappearing in front of us. The primary form of media played will be tapes and CDs, as they are among the most vulnerable forms of media that exist today. Whether by physical degradation or obsolescence, our ability to access these mediums diminishes daily and this is an attempt to catalog these sounds for the future, through minds and an archive of what was available to us now. rmzi (he/him) is an Afrofuturist and technologist from Memphis, TN. He focuses on collecting sounds from his childhood (Ethiopian folk songs, Arabic ballads, Funk and Soul from the delta) and blends them with references and callbacks from modern forms of music (Footwork, Jungle, Garage and House). He also produces digital experiences using the web as a medium, focusing on music generation, archivism and interactivity generally.
