Hiro Kone Nicky Mao is a New York based self-taught musician and composer who has worked extensively under the name Hiro Kone. She uses a combination of field recordings, strings and modular synth to cultivate her sound, a visceral meditation on rhythm, noise, and melody. Alchemizing disruption and decomposition into regenerative interior worlds, Mao's cascades of twisted recordings find an inherent partner in the effervescent current of synthesis, forging new terrain. Evident her last two genre defying albums, Silvercoat the throng (Hiro Kone, 2021) and In Rupture (Enxin/Onyx, 2025). Mao's range is best exhibited through her numerous collaborations, including Drew McDowall, Speaker Music, and Muqata'a amongst others. She has participated in special programming at MoMA NYC, ICA London, M+ Museum Hong Kong and in artist residences at Pioneer Works and EMS studios in Stockholm. For the past 10 years she has performed globally and appeared at many festivals including Dark Mofo, Rewire and Berlin Atonal.
