Anchors of Artistic Narrative

The exhibition Anchors of Artistic Narrative takes its inspiration from French semiologist Roland Barthes’ seminal concept of “Anchorage” — the way in which text functions as a restrictive and guiding force that anchors and stabilizes the often ambiguous meaning of images. In an era when contemporary art increasingly celebrates openness, fluidity, and infinite interpretation, this exhibition poses a timely and provocative question: Can artists reclaim authorship and narrative control by deliberately establishing boundaries for their work? Rather than viewing limitation as a constraint, Anchors of Artistic Narrative explores whether restriction, framing, and anchoring can become powerful expressions of artistic autonomy. When artists actively create “anchor points” for their works — be it through text, sequential imagery, figurative elements, spatial structures, systems of repetition, symbolic languages, or other strategic devices — what new possibilities emerge for meaning-making? This exhibition does not seek a regressive return to outdated conventions. Instead, it aims to reactivate mature and historically effective artistic strategies, breathing new vitality into them within today’s context. We invite works that confidently assert their own narrative anchors — works that dare to guide, direct, and hold the viewer’s interpretation with clarity and intention. Anchors of Artistic Narrative celebrates artists who choose to take control of how their stories are told and understood.
