We present: Careta, a solo exhibition by Jo Murua (01–23.05) Drawing from the visual traditions of Buenos Aires street culture and the graphic immediacy of nineties animation, Murua builds a cast of recurring characters suspended between the comic and the sinister. Smiles too large for their faces. Eyes fractured at the edges. Hoods drawn tight beneath a cartoon moon. Figures that read simultaneously as endearing and genuinely threatening, and refuse to resolve into either. No colour, and that’s the point. By stripping it out, Murua refuses the exoticisation that so often frames Latin American art in European context, the expectation of warmth, saturation, a certain immediate legibility. What remains is atmosphere: grey, granular, specific. A Buenos Aires that, under this light, looks remarkably like Berlin. That grain is not accidental. Airbrush on paper is one of the most unforgiving analogue techniques there is accumulation, irreversibility, no erasing mistakes. In a moment when images are produced faster than they can be looked at, Murua moves in the opposite direction. Slow. Physical. Evidence that a person was here, and made this with their hands. Three live DJ sets to accompany the day: @bbryta · @omen.osomendez · @m.espina__
