Centered on percussive sounds and drawing on her deep knowledge of UK bass music, she continues to connect and elevate diverse genres through her unique sensibility. Her journey, spanning over a decade both domestically and internationally, has been a thoughtful yet pure pursuit of the “sound,” culminating in TYO GQOM’s 2022 appearance at Nyege Nyege Festival, Uganda’s largest festival. The party series Gravity Bongo, held at Shibuya ENTER, continues to evolve as a space where she compiles and projects her more personal sensibilities. Here, we’d like to hear from KΣITO, a fellow member of TYO GQOM. ---What kind of presence is K8 within TYO GQOM? I think she’s a DJ who defies expectations in a good way. She’s skilled at reading the vibe of the venue, yet at the same time, I sense a firm conviction about what she wants to play. At every TYO GQOM party, she delivers a fresh set that’s different each time. In 2018, when we held our first TYO GQOM party, while I and mitokon were mostly playing South African Gqom, K8 delivered a stimulating set that blended Gqom with techno and UK bass. I think that served as a great accent for the party that day and influenced the direction of TYO GQOM going forward. He also demonstrates his talent in music production; I was blown away the first time I heard “Dance with Devils” from “TYO GQOM Compilation Vol. 1.” When we performed at the Nyege Nyege Festival in Uganda—after a 20-hour journey involving flights, cars, buses, and boats—hearing Don Zilla play this track at the venue I’d finally reached made me feel like all the hardships of the long journey had been worth it.
